Red Flags

🚩electoralChicago Tribune endorsed incumbents over Bury

Tribune Feb 18, 2026 editorial endorsed Brady-Davis and Eira Corral SepΓΊlveda for re-election and specifically targeted Bury's challenge of Beth McElroy Kirkwood, describing Kirkwood as someone Bury says is 'more interested in cozying up to her political pals' β€” implying Bury is a protest challenger without elected track record.

Bio

Sarah Bury (age 42) is a Rogers Park-based attorney and environmental advocate challenging three incumbents for one of the three open MWRD 6-year term seats. She earned a joint JD/MA in environmental law and policy from American University (Washington, DC), with internships at the City of Chicago legal department, U.S. EPA, Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), and DOJ. She grew up in a home that flooded and has experienced basement flooding in multiple Cook County neighborhoods. She previously ran for MWRD in 2019 (did not win) and applied for a board appointment in 2024 (not selected; Beth McElroy Kirkwood was instead appointed by Gov. Pritzker). She has been endorsed by Sierra Club. Chicago Tribune endorsed the three incumbents over Bury, noting McElroy Kirkwood 'is Bury's target' as someone 'more interested in cozying up to her political pals than tackling the complicated MWRD business at hand.' Bury's campaign raised $23,176 total with $6,352 cash on hand (ILSBE committee 35354).

Prior office: Student Representative, Whitney Young High School Local School Council (early 2000s). No prior elected office. Candidate for MWRD Commissioner 2019; applicant for MWRD board appointment 2024.
